Geography Curriculum: Intent

At Blakenall Heath Junior School, we believe that Geography is a key part of children’s wider education and their knowledge of the world around them. All children are provided with opportunities to develop a good understanding of their local area and the environment in which we live in, recognising the importance of the facilities we have around us. Through topics the children learn about our locality and discover what makes our area different to areas both in other UK destinations and around the world.

We provide an engaging and informative Geography curriculum that gives children a rich and varied knowledge of the world. All of our children will learn about a range of locations and habitats both close to home and outside of the UK. Children will use case studies based around their topics to gain key geographic skills such as map reading skills and directional knowledge. Children will also be aware of both human and physical characteristics of a range of locations and are encouraged to build their curiosity of both their local area and worldwide locations.

Geography Curriculum: Implementation

To achieve our intent, we have developed a comprehensive Geography curriculum that covers the National Curriculum requirements while providing opportunities for pupils to engage in deeper learning opportunities. The implementation of our Geography content involves the following key strategies:

1. Sequencing and Organisation

Our Geography curriculum is carefully sequenced, ensuring a progressive development of knowledge and skills across all year groups. We have mapped out a coherent and ambitious curriculum that builds on prior knowledge, allows pupils to develop a secure foundation and deeper their understanding as they progress.

2. Engaging and varied resources

We use a range of high-quality, up-to-date resources, including textbooks, atlases, digital materials and real-life artefacts to engage and captivate our pupils. Our resources provide opportunities for practical experiences, fieldwork and virtual experiences. We seek opportunities for local visits, invite external experts and use technology to enhance learning.

3. Stimulating teaching methods

Our skilled teachers use a variety of teaching methods to cater to different learning styles and abilities of our pupils. We employ a range of strategies, including whole-class discussions, group work, practical activities and independent research. Through engaging questioning and thought-provoking tasks, we encourage pupils to think critically, analyse data, evaluate perspectives and make informed decisions.

4. Incorporating ICT

We recognise the importance of digital skills in today's world and actively promote the use of information and communication technology within our geography curriculum. We provide access to online maps, satellite imagery and interactive resources that allow pupils to explore different regions, climates and cultures.

Geography Curriculum: Impact

The impact of our outstanding Geography curriculum is evidenced through:

1. Independent and inquisitive learners

Our curriculum nurtures a sense of curiosity and independence, encouraging pupils to ask probing questions, propose hypotheses and explore answers through their own investigations. Pupils are confident in expressing their ideas, observations and findings, fostering an enthusiasm for learning that extends beyond the classroom.

2. Ethical and responsible citizens

We empower or pupils to understand the environment and social impact of individual and collective actions, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the world and its diverse communities. Our pupils demonstrate empathy, understanding and respect for different cultures and environments, ensuring they become informed global citizens who contribute positively to society.

3. Transferable geographical skills

Our pupils develop a wide range of transferable geographical skills that are relevant across the curriculum and in real-world contexts. Through map reading, data analysis and critical thinking, pupils develop the ability to interpret and evaluate information, make informed decisions and communicate their ideas effectively.
