Personal Social Health Education (PSHE)

Personal, Social, Health, Education Curriculum: Intent

At Blakenall Heath Junior School, we have a clear and comprehensive intent for our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE) curriculum. Our intent is to provide a high-quality PSHE education that equips our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to live healthy, responsible, and successful lives. We believe that PSHE is a crucial part of our curriculum and, as such, we aim to deliver a holistic and inclusive program that meets the needs of all our pupils, respecting their individual differences and celebrating diversity.

We ensure that our PSHE curriculum is ambitious and progressive, covering a broad range of relevant and age-appropriate topics. By addressing sensitive issues such as mental health, relationships, and online safety, we equip our pupils with the essential knowledge and understanding needed to make informed decisions and navigate the challenges they may face in the modern world. We also aim to promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, fostering their understanding of British values, diversity, and equality.

Personal, Social, Health, Education Curriculum: Implementation

Our school effectively implements the PSHE curriculum by using a variety of strategies and resources that engage and inspire our pupils. This is taught through the Jigsaw curriculum and supplemented with a wide range of other resources. We ensure that PSHE is taught in a cross-curricular manner, embedding it within our wider curriculum to reinforce learning across subjects. Our highly skilled and trained staff deliver well-structured lessons that are interactive, age-appropriate, and differentiated to meet the needs of all pupils.

We follow the statutory guidelines set out by the Department for Education's PSHE program of study, while also considering the specific needs of our school community. Our curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect societal changes and to address emerging issues affecting our pupils. We promote an open and inclusive learning environment where pupils feel safe to discuss sensitive topics, fostering mutual respect and empathy.

We incorporate a range of teaching methods such as group discussions, role-plays, and practical activities to facilitate pupil participation and enhance their understanding. We make use of external experts, such as visiting speakers and other professionals, to enrich our PSHE provision. We also actively involve parents and guardians to ensure a strong partnership between home and school, seeking their input and feedback to tailor our curriculum to the needs of our pupils.

Personal, Social, Health, Education Curriculum: Impact

The impact of our outstanding PSHE curriculum can be clearly seen in the behaviour, attitudes, and well-being of our pupils. We have high expectations for personal development and well-being across the school community, and our PSHE curriculum plays a significant role in achieving this.

Through our PSHE education, our pupils develop a deep understanding of themselves and others, demonstrating respect, empathy, and kindness towards their peers. They acquire the skills and knowledge to make responsible choices and manage risk effectively, resulting in improved physical and mental well-being. Pupils also develop a strong understanding of healthy relationships, equality, and diversity, thereby promoting a safe and inclusive school environment.

The impact of our PSHE curriculum extends beyond the classroom. Pupils apply their knowledge and skills in various real-life contexts, demonstrating positive behaviour, resilience, and responsible citizenship both within and beyond the school environment. They develop the ability to confidently respond to challenges, engage in teamwork, and contribute positively to the wider community.

Monitoring and evaluation are integral to our PSHE curriculum. We track and measure the impact of our provision through regular assessments, pupil voice exercises, and feedback from parents/guardians and staff. Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures that our PSHE education remains relevant, effective, and impactful for all our pupils.

The impact of our PSHE education is evident in the positive attitudes, behaviour, and well-being of our pupils, both within school and in their wider lives.
