Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education (PE) Curriculum: Intent

At Blakenall Heath Junior School, physical Education (PE) is a fundamental component of the curriculum. Our intent is to provide a well-rounded and inclusive PE curriculum that encompasses a wide range of physical activities and promotes physical literacy, positive well-being, and lifelong participation in sport and physical activity. Our intent is rooted in the belief that PE not only enhances physical fitness but also fosters social, emotional, and cognitive development among our pupils. We aim to provide every child with access to high-quality PE lessons and extracurricular opportunities that ensure progress, embed healthy lifestyle choices, and nurture a love for physical activity.

Physical Education (PE) Curriculum: Implementation

1. Curriculum Design:

Our PE curriculum is skills-based, progressive, and aligned with the National Curriculum requirements. We ensure coverage of various disciplines, including gymnastics, dance, athletics, games, and outdoor adventurous activities. Our curriculum reflects the diverse needs and abilities of our pupils, incorporating differentiation and inclusion strategies. We have identified key learning objectives and progression pathways for each year group, ensuring a logical sequence of skills development.

2. Qualified and Enthusiastic Staff:

Our PE provision is delivered by a highly qualified and dedicated PE specialist. They possess appropriate subject knowledge and strive to enhance their professional development continually. Staff create an engaging and positive learning environment, using effective teaching strategies to maximise pupil participation, enjoyment, and progress. They promote a growth mindset and encourage pupils to set personal targets, celebrating individual achievements.

3. Broad Range of Activities:

We offer a wide range of activities to ensure all pupils experience enjoyment and success in PE. Indoor and outdoor sessions are balanced to provide varied experiences and opportunities. Our curriculum is inclusive, addressing diverse needs and abilities, while considering the cultural backgrounds and interests of our pupils. Partnering with external clubs and organisations further enhances our provision, introducing new activities and expertise to engage and motivate pupils.

4. Well-Resourced Facilities:

We have invested in our PE equipment to deliver high-quality lessons. Our indoor and outdoor spaces are safe, well-maintained, and suitable for a range of activities. We regularly review and update our resources to ensure they are accessible, relevant, and engaging for pupils of all abilities.

5. Collaborative Partnerships:

We actively engage with external partners, including local sports clubs, community organisations, and other educational institutions. These partnerships provide additional expertise, widen enrichment opportunities, and expose our pupils to a broader range of sporting activities. Collaborations further extend our commitment to promoting lifelong participation in physical activity among our pupils and their families.

6. Assessment and Tracking:

Formative assessment strategies are embedded within our PE curriculum to monitor pupil progress continually. Our assessment methods include teacher observation, peer assessment, self-evaluation, and regular feedback. We record and track pupil achievements using a systematic approach, identifying areas of strength and areas for improvement. This information is shared with pupils and parents, helping all stakeholders to understand progress, celebrate successes, and inform future learning.

Physical Education (PE) Curriculum: Impact

The PE provision at our school results in a significant impact on our pupils. Through our intent and implementation strategies, we aim to achieve the following:

1. Physical Literacy:

Our pupils develop a broad range of physical skills, focusing on agility, coordination, balance, and competitiveness. They become physically literate individuals, able to apply these skills confidently across different activities and in wider contexts.

2. Positive Well-being:

Engaging in regular physical activity positively impacts the well-being of our pupils, improving their mental health, self-esteem, and resilience. They develop a growth mindset and embrace challenges, demonstrating perseverance and determination in PE and beyond.

3. Healthy Lifestyle Choices:

Our pupils understand the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. They make informed choices regarding diet, exercise, and personal well-being. They are aware of the short-term and long-term benefits of physical activity and can apply this knowledge to their lives.

4. Inclusive Participation:

We foster an environment where every pupil feels included, regardless of ability or background. Through differentiation and targeted support, we ensure all pupils can access and benefit from PE, participating fully and embracing opportunities to challenge themselves.

5. Sporting Pathways and Aspirations:

Our PE provision ignites a passion for sport and physical activity in our pupils. They develop interests and talents that extend beyond the curriculum, creating opportunities to join local clubs, representing the school in competitions, and pursuing further sporting achievements beyond their primary education.

6. Effective Collaboration and Leadership:

Our PE provision promotes teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. Pupils learn to work collaboratively, demonstrating respect for others and effective communication in a variety of sporting contexts. They develop leadership qualities, taking responsibility for their own learning and inspiring their peers.
